Firstly welcome to BF-F!

Against Eldar you want to take weapon batteries as opposed to lances. Eldar recieved a 2+ (IIRC) save vs lances, which makes them pretty ineffective unless used en-masse. The only effect holofields have on WB's however is one shift to the right.

I can't remember off the top of my head which Chaos ships mount more batteries I'm afraid.

I would also suggest against torps and bombers, as they're both too slow and Eldar fighters are fantastic. Some fighters may be helpful to fight off any Darkstar bombers though.

5 Carnages and a 100 pts Warmaster = 1000 pts. That gives you 130 WB points altogether mwuahaha. Or you could replace one Carnage with a Devastation, so you have 4 fighters to intercept bombers and torpedoes. Then you have to take a 50 pts Warmaster with a mark of chaos.

I played two 1000 pts battles against Eldar now (haven't played against them before) and they had no chance at all against my five Carnages. In the first battle they could cripple two of my cruisers and in the second only one, while my WBs shredded one ship after the other. Well, they hadn't much luck with their rolls and my opponent is very inexperienced with Eldar, but it seems that Eldar are just too fragile for 130 WBs. Maybe we will use the Eldar MMS rules next time. And I didn't need any special tactics, just fired broadsides the whole time, thanks to the good range of the Carnages the Eldar ships were within my grasp most of the time.

Yeah, against a force like yours I think his best bet would be lots of Torpedoes and Bombers, and to then just run away. :)

Ive played a similar encounter too with similar results.
In most fights massed batteries reliably shreed the weak eldar hulls, Even going on all ahead full to try to out flank a chaos fleet wont help if the warmaster wont break formation.

What was your opponent using in his list ?

I have to say i do hate this thing of tailoring fleets against specifics. Its just not in the spirit of a table top game. Its also why although im new i want to start playing campaigns straight away.

Sure at 1,000 points i can talor any force to take on eldar... Ie tough ships with good fire arcs that have lots of Weapons Batteries. Or i can talor a force to obliterate Space marines. Ships that have lots of lances and/or plenty of bombers due to their lack in fighters. Nice long range weapons.

It just seems to really play to your intelligence instead of your strategic and tactical abilities on a table top.

Built a nice all round list, or a themed list and always take that is my advice. Yes against some enemies it may be hard to play with... Perhaps swap a ship here or there. But if you did that against me with your Chaos i'd just swap every ship i have for ships that can carrier bombers and overwhelm your ships while staying out of your range (with eldar easy to do).... And so starts the circle of coming up with the better list instead of the better tactics.

Sorry if it seems harsh, so long as your both having fun thats all that matters i guess. I just think its a bit frustrating.
