well, the non standard sized link boxes on the left look a little unprofessional. and the ads really are annoying....
i hate to be so critical.. but i think, you have fallen into the three biggest traps that webmasters for hobby pages can. 1) using free hosting: it may look appealing, but you have adds plastered over your page and you get hardly any space, commercial hosting is so cheap now that these free website building places really are obsolete, they had their place when i start webmastering (about 7 years ago now) but that was when webspace was expensive per mb. 2) not getting a proper domain name: again, these are really cheap, and search engines look down on websites without a domain name 3) using static code: no one really should do this nowadays, its much easier to use a CMS such as joomla or E107 and code/find a template.
again, sorry for being so critical. but i am really trying to help

All good suggestions from Magnus. It will make your life (and mine too) easier in the long run.
All I want to suggest is simple links like Tauonline- One link to all new posts since my last visit One link to replies to my posts
This is how I like to browse forums.

The problem with that is those are features you must pay for. TO actually has to make a significant chunk of cash to keep going, and this site isn't yet big enough to make investing capital in it a good idea. Maybe if we all chipped in a bit Rezzy (Yurrath) wouldn't mind moving to paid hosting?

How much are we talking about here?
I'm sure once we generate enough content (and resulting hits) that advertising can take over- is there a way of estimating how long that will take? Even then, generating content is easier with a pay site.

Now I'm working full time and the boards are getting busier I wouldn't mind paying a small amount for hosting - I just hope I'll be able to transfer the posts! I'll look into this over the next few days. Watch this space!

Yeah, I have spoken with him about it before at length. He's actually offered me hosting before, but the problem is I would have to build the forums from scratch (i.e. code them myself) AFAIK. I think I'll likely just upgrade this free package I'm using now, avoids a lot of hassle!

Update - I do now intend to upgrade to paid hosting. I tried to upgrade last night, but their site was playing up and wouldn't let me subscribe, I'll try again tonight! I would like to point out however, that this would be for the site. The options birdiii suggested regarding posts would still not be available, there would be no change to the forums at all. Alternatively I could leave the site how it is, and buy 'credits' from Proboards for the forum to get rid of adverts, but even then the suggested options would not be available. The only real way to make major changes to the forum is to change providers, but I'm not sure (infact I think it's pretty unlikely) that we'd be able to transfer the posts from this forum, and I think that would be a bit much to start from scratch again. Let me know what you think. If possible I will set up a way for members to donate to BF-F to keep it going. It would be very much appreciated! The hosting package I am looking at (for our website, not the forum) is £6.99pm, so £83.88pa. This includes a free domain name (actually, two if i needed a second). - As a side note, I believe this package also comes with a forum, but I'm unlikely to use it, as I doubt it will be as good as this one, and like I said, transferring posts may be a no-no. Where paying for this forum is concerned, here are some excerpts from the ad-free etc services: Personally I think this is a bit steep, and the adverts on this forum don't seem very intrusive to me? I can also pay to allow people to attach files, but tbh I don't think this is necessary. I couldn't find anything, but I will look again tonight for a new board paying package with proboards, because if anyone is going to be able to transfer the posts from this forum it is going to be them. Don't hesitate to put opinions forward or give alternative suggestions.

well, most CMS scripts usually have forum modules, i know e107 comes with one and joomla has several that can be downloaded and installed for free.
unfortunately, this is what makes these free forum thingies evil and sucky, they lock you in with no way to transfer, to be honest, i would just start over again perhaps copying and pasting some of the more useful stickies

Good news! I have found some code posted by a member called Chris on the Proboards support forum that allows us to have the 'View posts since last visit' function. Quoted from the forum: For now I'm just going to add the code to the forum index page, if you would like to see it elsewhere I'll see if this is possible. Whoever said admins were useless? I have also queried the transferring of posts and memberships to another forum, but I expect a chilly response. [Edit] It's not in the most useful place, but it's there. I'll post a screenshot soon so you can all find it easily. [/Edit] [Edit 2]Ok, here it is.[/Edit2] So far I haven't found a 'Replies to your posts' code I'm afraid.
