Man Of War
The Man Of War is a fairly rare form of vessel, designed to fill the gap between the Battleship and the Cruiser. Lacking in speed, the Man Of War has an impressive amount of firepower, and can survive far more damage than most other ships of its size.
There are several different classes of Man Of War, some of which have been used since the dawn of the Imperium, perhaps earlier.
Any Imperial Fleet may make use of a Man Of War. It counts as a Battleship for the purposes of fleet composition. However, they may not use the Heretic class.
In addition, any Chaos fleet may make use of the Heretic class Man Of War. It counts as a Grand Cruiser for fleet composition.
Templar Class Man Of War (280pts)
The Templar Class is widely considered to be the original Man Of War variant. Packing numerous gun-batteries, the Templar can lay down a massive amount of firepower for its size, and sustain damage far in excess of any other ship, save perhaps the Astartes Battle Barge. The oldest serving Templar known in the Imperium is the Fortis Tempestus, which has seen battle since before the Great Crusade. It has had numerous refits over time, most noticeably was the fitting of Shields, and more powerful engines.
Notes: The Fortis Tempestus originally had no shields, and instead relied on massive internal bracing. If you wish, you may field it in its original form, in which case it has no Shields, but always receives a 4+ save against all hits, as if on Brace for Impact. Note that there is no additional benefit for using the Brace for Impact special order.
Crusader Class Man Of War (280pts)
The Crusader is a more specialised variant on the Man Of War template, designed to engage heavily-armoured enemy ships with powerful Lance batteries. The Crusader struggles to fight unsupported, but even against difficult opposition, it can trust in its massive defensive power to see it through the worst of the enemy attacks.
Notes: The Storm of Majesty was refitted with short-ranged guns, providing more firepower. If you wish to field this craft, reduce the range of all Lances to 30cm, but add +1 to the Firepower of each Battery.
Heretic Class Man Of War (320pts)
It is widely believed that the Heretic was produced by the minions of Chaos somewhere within the Eye of Terror, as no record of its service within the Imperium exist. The Heretic’s engines have been altered to provide superior forward movement, but at a cost to manoeuvrability. The Heretic also sports numerous launch bays, and can scramble a significant number of attack craft at any one time.
Notes: May not use Come to New Heading special orders. The Launch Bays are equipped with all three types of Chaos Attack Craft, and the Torpedo Tubes use Standard and Boarding Torpedoes.
The vessel Fortress of Chaos was fitted with a stolen Nova Cannon after a particularly brutal campaign. It may replace its Torpedoes with a Nova Cannon for +20pts.
