I've heard many things from other places that the Eldar are incredibly tough to defeat because of their speed and their holofields making them a pain in the behind for virtually every other fleet.
I was wondering i this means that my (soon to be) necron fleet won't stand a chance against my friend's Eldar?

The Necrons are probably the best fleet to fight Eldar with. The Weapon batteries of the Necrons ignore holofields completely, and the Necron lances ignore all shields (including holofields) on a to hit roll of '6' Furthermore, Necrons are faster than average (though nowhere near as fast as Eldar) and if the use all ahead full orders, can usually catch up to the fastest Eldar ships. (be careful though, you will 1/2 your firepower that way.)
But the main difficulty in beating Eldar is when you fight an experienced opponent. They will try to cause minor damage to you, then disengage, winning before you can retaliate. If you have not played vs. them before, I'd recommend keeping your fleet together instead of splitting up to hunt them down. Alone, your ships will be picked off by his faster movement and he will win. Concentrate on inflicting as much damage as you receive. (That is to say, either keep him from hurting you, or let yourself get hit when you know you can hit him as well.) If he leads you in the victory points he will most likely win. But the Eldar ships are the most fragile in the game, and you have weapons they have no defense against, so if you can cause the first few points of damage, and cripple or destroy a ship or two of his, you will most likely win in the end.
I hope that helps.

I tend to agree with Brownknight on this one, Necrons are the most formidable Eldar opponents. I do play eldar ( though im primarlily a Tau player) Ive found as eldar player, I like to keep close to the necrons and try to get in thier rear arcs. its a vicous dance around each other and it doesnt always pay off. Ive used a pair of arauras to stay on the tail of scyth and ended up trading the lite for his heavy. a good trade.
As a necron player, dont let the eldar get in your 6. its really hard to get em off, and your not guarenteeded to get a shot back in retaliation. stager your fleet to offer protection to your lead ships rears. a v formation or a echelon left or right helps as well. keep your escorts close. a necron escort sent off on a search and destroy against eldar is most often a dead escort. Same really goes against imp or chaos. Necron escorts are best used as fire support or ablative hits for the cruisers, Not chasing down enemy escorts. 5+ save wont cut it. Thats about all I have atm.
