The Eldar are biggest bunch of scum-bags in Gothic. A well-commanded fleet can (and will) dice up an enemy taskforce, spreading fear and carnage behind them like a cloak.
So why this topic? Simple. My main opponent is Eldar. From my experience, other commanders may find ways to battle the Eldar, and Eldar commanders may be able to spot these patterns before they occur, and counter-attack.
Step 1: Bringing your guns to bear
Eldar are elusive. Their "Ordnance move" means that they can, if lined up properly, move towards you, fire, and dart past before you can fight back. This is the modus operandii of the Eldar, so get used to it.
Normally, an Eldar commander will try to position himself behind your ships, so as to avoid the worst of the inevitable return fire. A quick burn-retros may bring a broadside to bear, but it will also limit your firepower.
So how to combat this? Simple, don't fight up close! Work out what units you can engage with the most firepower, and least maneuvering, then attack them.
Escorts will also prove essential. Keep them way back so they can counter-attack when the Eldar try a fly-by.
2: Holofields
Let's not mess around, if you're using anything but Gun Batteries, you're in trouble. Eldar Holofields can shrug off an unholy amount of firepower, so don't expect your lances (or ordnance) to do much.
So how do you combat this? Well one method is to fire until you cause a Critical, and pray the Holofield goes down. If this happens, target that ship with every last gun you have, and blow it to space-dust. You'll be glad of the Victory Points.
Alternatively, remember that the Holofield does not block Blast Markers. Try to force the Eldar to fly through Blast Markers, stellar phenomena and so-forth. With luck, they'll kill themselves, saving you the trouble.
Failing all else... just pray the Gods of Chance are with you, because you'll need them.
3: Fast, but Fragile
Remember that, more than any other army, Eldar are fragile. With 4+ armour, and their increased vulnerability to Critical Hits, any shots that do get through their holofields is bound to hurt. Exploit this. Try to inflict as much damage as you can, and they should come apart at the seams.
Finally, I recommend the Overlord Battlecruiser, or any other ship with 60cm Gun Batteries. You'll be glad of that extra range...
