+++Is the BFG boxed set a good place to start for Chaos? Still not sure if I want to start at all... although I do like BFG. Maybe after I've started my Traitor Guard army and bought a digital camera. But anyway, is it? Also what other models should I get to start off with?+++

The Starter Box gives you the rules, markers, summary sheets, four multi-part Imperial Cruiser Kits, and four multi-part Chaos Cruiser Kits... so yes, it's good to use. Also, if your opponent agrees, you can use both fleets as one! How you ask? Simple: Imperial Ships are the up-to-date models currently used. However, sometimes they may rebel, and join Chaos. Likewise, the Chaos ships are just old Imperial ones now out of service. However, there's still a chance a few may be floating around... Oh, and be sure to build a Styx. They rock.

I agree! Regardless of the fleet you intend to collect the Starter Box is a must have, because it has lots of extras (including the rulebook ) that are pretty essential. It probably works out cheaper than buying all the models/counters/books seperately too.

I could also point out that the box set is the ONLY place you can get the actual rule book. The Armada book you could order and has alot of the extra fleets rules as well which makes for a good deal, but wasn't available when I first started.
If your going chaos you might want to think of your allegance before hand as to which chaos power you want. There are a number of ideas you can do for paint schemes and converting to show the diffrent marks. Though I don't use them for play I did turn the ones I got in the box into a diffrent ship for each chaos god.

I guess if there isn't, I might as well get the boxed set+++ +++About which Chaos god... well the fleet-to-be will (if I ever start it) be based on my WH40k armies, so it'll be Slaanesh. I plan to have some of the ships belonging to my CSM army, some assigned to the traitor guard, and the odd one or to will belong to my Chaos Tau (with Chaos navigators on board to guide them through the warp). And also one ship assigned to each character as it's "lord" or "warmaster" (I think there are rules for this as I've seen rules for chaos fleets for the EoT campaign). So the Chaos Chapter Master's ship will have CSM crew, warmaster and loadsa cool options, whereas ships belonging to the faceless grunts of the traitor guard won't have much cool stuff at all+++

+++Ooh, so I don't have to buy the boxed set just to get the rulebook then. I think I probably will anyway though seeing as it contains pretty much all the other essentials (and means I won't have to carry a ton of paper around every time I want to game ). Now all that remains is to magically summon up an extra £40 (or whatever it costs) and buy it. Easier said than done, I'd just go and spend it on one of the 1001 other things I want to buy. Oh well, Christmas is coming +++

There there Felix. Even so you guys would still have to buy the Armada book or at least the 2003 anual. While the rules book has the ship lists for Imperium, Chaos, Orks and Eldar you would need the others for the Marine, Tyranid, Tau and Necron fleet lists.
Actually thinking about it the 2003 anual is to old to have the Tau lists.

+++Well, I was originally asking about Chaos but I couldn't wait so I already done them. A Styx, a Hades, a Carnage and a Slaughter class. And before anyone points it out, I know it's illegal because it contains as many heavy cruisers as normal ones. I only reallised after I built them all though . I'll just have to buy a couple more cruisers I suppose +++

+++And, on that note, what class of cruisers should I build for the next 2 chaos cruisers I buy? Obviously not heavy cruisers . And where should I go from there to expand my fleet? A load of escorts? Or a battleship?+++ +++Thanks in advance fr your help ;D+++
