I love Gothic fluff, which is why I have penned this large-scale campaign, which takes a small amount of inspiration from the campaign I am currently running (but only a small amount… honest). Ladies and gentlemen, I give you…
Battlefleet Fury
Part 1:
The coming of Heroes:
Battlefleet Fury was a shamble of a fleet when Admiral Nibel entered the Fury Sector. Having exhausted many of their resources battling with Tyranid Splinter-Fleets, and an ever-increasing number of Pirates, Battlefleet Fury was stretched thin, with many of their ships still under construction or repair. Those that were in service were either under-crewed, inexperienced, or both. Consequently, the fighting ability of the fleet was in question, and they were unable to contain the increasing number of raiders.
Admiral Nibel came to the system in search of Tal’set, an Eldar Corsair and leader of the Leviathan Corsairs. With Eldar attacks reported in the Tempest Subsector, Nibel was convinced that Tal’set was responsible, and aquired a sizeable fleet of half a dozen Capital Ships, and double the number of Escorts.
Though none knew it yet, Tal’set and Nibel would play a decisive role in the survival of the Sector.
Invasion and Betrayal:
Whilst Nibel’s fleet was docking at the Forgeworld Tempest Secundus, reports came in from the Archon Sub-sector of a massive Ork invasion fleet gathering. Port Archon was put onto full alert, and all available ships were called in to protect the Port.
However, the fleet would be dealt a terrible blow from within. Two Vengeance class Grand Cruisers, the Insult and the Injury, formed the keystone of the fleet’s combat prowess. These ships rebelled, gunning their way out of the dock, and fleeing to the Warp. At the same time, reports flooded in from several systems of Capital ships and well-armed escort squadrons launching hit and run attacks on colonies, convoys and orbital installations throughout Archon. One such vessel was confirmed as The Ferryman, a Styx class Heavy Cruiser wanted for numerous acts of piracy and crimes against the Imperium.
The presence of this ship confirmed the fears of the Fury commanders; the Taint of Chaos had entered the Sector.
With their key ships lost, the Archon fleet fought a terrible and desperate battle to save their fleet base. The Imperial fleet suffered many losses, but ultimately succeeded in defeating the Orks. This victory was short lived, as the Insult and Injury returned to claim the prize that was Port Archon. With the aid of several Chaos escorts, and supporting Cruisers, the Port was taken, and its resources and production capabilities turned over to the Dark Gods.
Pincer Moves:
As Battlefleet Fury prepared to counter-attack, Port Tempest reported engagements against a large Chaos fleet, easily capable of matching the Imperial forces in the sector two to one. Pincered, the Imperial commanders had little time to plan their next move. Fortunately, the Ork invaders seemed unwilling to lose the prize of Port Archon, and engaged the Chaos fleets. Using the Orks as a shield, the Imperials drove their fleets into the Tempest Subsector, knowing that to lose the Tempest Forgeworld would be a deathblow for the Sector.
It was then that the Chaos revealed their plan. Having secretly allied with the Orks, the Chaos had staged the attack so as to lure the Imperials into Tempest. Driving onwards, the Chaos fleet raced towards the Fury Subsector, eager to claim their prize, while the Orks set about looting and pillaging the worlds of Archon.
As the Chaos drove into Port Fury, Nibel unleashed his own surprise. His fleet waited, powered down, within the asteroid fields of Fury. As the Chaos fleet entered, his vessels fired up their engines, and prepared to engage. The battle of the Dock-Wall had begun.
War for the Dock-Wall:
Port Fury was built upon a massive asteroid that had become trapped millennia before in the gravity field of Fury. The main feature was the Dock-Wall: a massive edifice of docking bays, supply depots, repair stations and gun batteries. The Dock-Wall held no less than eight capital ships, all in varying states of repair and refit, with two more docked elsewhere on the asteroid.
As the Chaos advanced, the station went onto high alert. Station and ship crews worked frantically to get as many of the vessels operational as possible, whilst weapon teams sought to load and aim their weapons as swiftly as possible.
The Chaos fleet was alerted to the presence of Nibel’s forces by the two Wolves of the Fleet. Both Mars Class Battlecruisers, the Timberwolf, Nibel’s own ship, and the Direwolf, commanded by Captain Drake, fired their Nova Cannons at once. The volley ended the Insult in a firey blast, and the detonation claimed three Iconoclasts.
The Imperials advanced armed and ready. Torpedo salvos from the fleet and the Port created a deadly cross-fire, forcing the Chaos to split and separate. However, the Chaos had the numbers, and pushed on for the Dock. Waves of Fighters, Bombers and Assault Boats duelled amidst the endless volleys of torpedoes, and white-hot blasts of Lance fire. The Chaos pounded the Dock-Wall mercilessly, and though its powerful shields survived most of the attacks, several times the Dock, or the ships therein, took damage from the Chaos fleet. This damage would further delay the deployment of many ships for months, and one Lunar Class was horrendously crippled, taking nearly a full year to become space-worthy again.
After a two-day duel, the Chaos retreated, leaving four of Nibel’s ships severely damaged, and one Crippled. However, with the destruction of the Insult, and the crippling of the Darkforce, Maelstrom of Chaos and Indestructible Hate, the Imperials had won a great victory. The Dock-Wall survived. Port Fury was safe…
